DDOT is moving forward with some of the projects proposed in the agency’s Connecticut Avenue multimodal safety improvement planning, and is making parking and other changes around Murch Elementary.
The DDOT notices of intent will be discussed at ANC 3F’s April 21 virtual meeting. (See the agenda below.)
The Murch plan includes adding a mid-block raised crosswalk at the school’s Davenport Street entrance and removing the street’s existing speed table. The public comment period closes on April 28. Search “NOI-26-82-PSD” at noi.ddot.dc.gov.
The Connecticut Avenue changes listed in DDOT’s notice of intent are relatively modest compared even to DDOT’s plans for the corridor after bike lanes were removed from the project. DDOT told ANC 3F last year that curb extensions and left turn pockets were also out.
The plans in ANC 3F’s section of Connecticut include:
A new traffic signal at Chevy Chase Parkway/Harrison Street. And the slip lane will be eliminated.
Closing 36th Street between Everett Street and Connecticut. It can be a dangerous spot for pedestrians.
Drivers have a wide right turn from Connecticut and often take it at full speed. DDOT also plans to prohibit drivers from turning left onto Connecticut from Everett.
A Nebraska Avenue intersection reconfiguration. There’s a lot going on here. The slip lane for drivers turning right on Connecticut will be removed.

The northbound and southbound Metrobus stops will each move to the other side of the intersection. The signal cabinet by the southbound bus shelter will move as well.

The bus stop and signal cabinet moves will do a lot to improve pedestrian visibility at the intersection.
Some Connecticut Avenue projects are getting under way later this year. Others are set to start next year. And additional changes are taking place in ANC 3/4G territory to the north. In each case, the deadline to comment on the Connecticut Avenue projects is May 4. Visit noi.ddot.dc.gov, and search for NOI #26-85-CPD (ANC 3F) or NOI #26-86-CPD (ANC 3/4G).
Some previous ANC 3F meetings have been held at Forest Hills DC and on Zoom. This meeting will be on Zoom only:
