These have been tense times. And this week, amplifying the feelings of anxiety and fear, were warnings, then reports, of Immigration and Customs Enforcement visits to several DC restaurants.
Those visits occurred on Tuesday. On Wednesday, rumors spread online that ICE was targeting nannies at Forest Hills Playground.
Reporters who went to the playground to check out the rumors found no ICE activity, but there had been police activity nearby. News4 reports MPD and US Marshals arrested a murder suspect at 4607 Connecticut Avenue.
WTOP reports the officers never set foot on the playground, but they were close enough to give parkgoers a shock. One told WTOP that she called the police after she spotted a man in tactical gear donning a mask. It was not clear to her that he was in law enforcement. News4 says others left after seeing an officer with a gun.
As anxiety-inducing as the experience must have been, we can’t help but be heartened by what happened next: Neighbors showed up to support the nannies and look out for the kids. “Some who came to the park even brought flyers and cards to hand out that listed their rights,” reports WTOP.
