ANC 3F Commissioner Ryan Cudemus-Brunelli has resigned, opening his seat up for a special election if more than one candidate files the paperwork.
Cudemus-Brunelli announced at the July 18th ANC 3F meeting he is moving out of the single-member district that he has represented since January 1st: 3F01.
“It’s been a pleasure to serve everyone in 3F01,” he said. “I’m looking forward to see who the next commissioner will be… and wish them the best.”
Cudemus-Brunelli later told Forest Hills Connection via email that his single member district is “relatively quiet” and is “100% residential, absent the Sheridan School. Any incoming commissioner should work with Commissioner [James] Tandaric if they would like to come up to speed on Sheridan School affairs.”
The DC Board of Elections certified the vacancy on July 21st, setting an election process in motion. The notice gives candidates until 4:45 p.m. on Monday, August 14th to submit nominating petitions.

Those include:
- Requesting a nominating petition. You can either email candidate@dcboe.org or pick one up at the Board of Elections office (1015 Half Street SE, Suite 750, Washington, DC 20003). If using email, specify that you are requesting petitions for the open seat for ANC 3F01. The petitions can also be submitted via email
- Collecting the signatures of at least 25 registered voters who, like the candidate, live in the single-member district.
- Completing and submitting a Declaration of Candidacy by the filing deadline.

It’s a good idea to first confirm confirm you live within ANC 3F01’s boundaries. It’s also a good idea to collect more than 25 signatures, as some could be disqualified during the challenge period that will take place August 17th through August 23rd.
If you have enough valid signatures, congratulations! You are a candidate. And, if you are the only candidate who filed, congratulations! You are ANC 3F01’s new commissioner.
However, if there is more than one candidate for the position, an in-person special election will be held by the ANC 3F in association with the Office of the ANC, said OANC’s Gail Fast in an email.
“The seat must be filled by October 22, 2023 or else it will be declared vacant again,” she wrote. And the process begins again.
Correction: We originally reported that the special election must be held during a regularly scheduled ANC meeting. There is no such restriction.
