The neighbor who made Linnean Park’s first-ever interpretive signs has also created one for the nearby Broad Branch tributary of Rock Creek.
John Burwell’s latest sign, on Linnean Avenue near the footbridge leading to the walking path, informs visitors of the Broad Branch stream’s history as a “daylighted” waterway. The project that brought the stream from a pipe underground to the surface was completed in 2014, and created a welcome natural resource for the community.
Burwell, a Rock Creek Park volunteer and certified Weed Warrior, also highlighted the Broad Branch’s native trees with an illustration identifying the leaves.
And at the suggestion of the Rock Creek Park botanist, Burwell tagged select native trees and shrubs along the trails with QR codes that direct smartphone browsers to a website with more photos and information.
