The second biggest Rock Creek cleanup event of the year* is almost upon us. This Monday, January 15th is the MLK Day of Service, and Rock Creek Conservancy is hosting several cleanups – including four at trails and tributaries right in our neighborhood.
The Conservancy says volunteer activities include (1) cutting invasive English ivy from trees as part of the Conservancy’s effort to protect the Rock Creek tree canopy; (2) removing other invasive plants such as knotweed and porcelainberry so natives can grow in the park; and (3) cleaning up trash that has accumulated along streams.

Broad Branch: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Trash cleanup (kid friendly)
Peirce Mill with Blue Planet Scuba: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Trash cleanup (kid friendly)
Soapstone Tributary with DC Mayor’s Office: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Trash cleanup (kid friendly)
Hearst Rec Center: 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., English Ivy removal
For those volunteers who can’t attend an activity during MLK weekend, Rock Creek Conservancy is hosting a cleanup at the section of Melvin Hazen Park east of Connecticut Avenue on Saturday, January 20th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. More details can be found here.
