A lot of the Labor Day beach traffic was on two wheels and two legs – on Beach Drive

by Marlene Berlin

For many hikers and bikers, Labor Day weekend at the beach – meant heading to Beach Drive.

Beach Drive north of Tilden Street/Park Road has been closed since August 28th for work on the second and third phases of the roadway’s rehabilitation.

But I saw hikers and cyclists were out in abundance on Labor Day – on an otherwise on a closed section of the road – enjoying a car-free Beach Drive north of the Broad Branch Road turn off. And with Broad Branch closed to vehicles between Brandywine Street and Beach Drive, motorists seemed to steer clear of that roadway as well.

I didn’t get photos of the people enjoying the beautiful Labor Day weather. But I did get a good sense of the scale of the preparation and the actual work to come on Beach Drive.
