I’ve been sharing updates and photos of the Broad Branch stream daylighting project, but it’s really something you should see for yourself. So I’ve cajoled Steve Saari, who manages this project for the District Department of the Environment, to lead us on another walk of the site. He’ll explain the Broad Branch stream’s move from an underground pipe to its old stream bed, and how the water flow will be managed.
We will meet on Sunday, May 4th at 3 p.m., at the corner of Linnean Avenue and Broad Branch Road. It might be muddy, so dress accordingly. And bring your binoculars to better see the burgeoning bird life of this new habitat.
Work began in February, and already, the stream is coming to life.
Last Sunday, the weather was glorious, and I could not resist walking over to see the week’s progress. The stream is growing, its gurgling much more pronounced, and many more birds are flitting in and out of the trees.
And then what did I spy, a mallard couple, paddling up and down the stream.
I hope they will make it their home, and that we will soon see new ducklings paddling behind them.
