In early April, a DDOT crew placed flexible bollards and planters across 36th Street where it intersects with Reno Road.
Goodbye to Reno Road’s northbound exit onto 36th Street. The small-scale speedway is being closed off, as cars leaving Reno Road often did so at non-residential street speeds.
And for those looking to make that right turn, Warren and Windom Streets are still open for business. pic.twitter.com/Yk89fSiHBN

The closure of the street segment between Reno Road and Warren Street may have seemed abrupt, but it was something neighbors had requested of DDOT and ANC 3F as far back as 2015. The commission passed a resolution in 2017, sent it off to DDOT, and that was the last we heard about it until last February, when Ward 3 Council member Matt Frumin linked to DDOT’s notice of intent in a constituent newsletter.
DDOT community engagement manager Christian Piñeiro will be at ANC 3F’s April 23rd meeting to discuss local projects, including the slip lane closure.
The agenda below also includes updates on the Soapstone Valley sewer rehabilitation project (here’s our latest on that) and the DC Archives at UDC.

Dave Skidmore says
Rather than closing the slip lane and compounding potential dangers at the Reno and Warren intersection, it would be better to calm traffics by putting a stop sign at the northbound end of the slip lane and putting two speed humps on 36th between Warren and Yuma.
Roberta Carroll says
Speed humps are not necessary. There is not that much traffic for this treatment. The traffic moves smoothly with the slip open and gets traffic moving just paint the crosswalks clearly on the road to protect pedestrians.
Charlie says
If they’re closing slip lanes, then they should also close the slip lane from Connecticut Avenue onto 36th Street. It is far more dangerous (especially to pedestrians) than was the slip lane from Reno Road to 36th Street. Last week a car drove up the one-way slip lane in the wrong direction and nearly caused a head-on collision. Fessenden Street will still be open for business.
Roberta Catherine Carroll says
No reason to close the slip lane, it makes turning from Reno Road harder and more of a problem. Who does this serve, this closure? No one. Waste of a useable road and good exit from Reno Road. Rethink what you are doing.
DCdog says
Exactly! The Reno and Warren intersection has always been dangerous. I have witnessed countless accidents at this intersection over the years. This short-sighted “solution” will just make Reno and Warren more dangerous, and none of the neighbors are happy about it.
