The queen, the heiress, and the lost treasure

We don’t know of any royal visits to this neighborhood, by Queen Elizabeth II or any other monarch (and we hope you will tell us if you do). But Forest Hills did have a wealthy cereal heiress who rubbed shoulders with the royals.

In 1953, two years before Marjorie Merriweather Post purchased the Hillwood estate (4155 Linnean Avenue NW), she traveled to London to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s coronation. And she lost something at one of the coronation parties at Buckingham Palace: a priceless emerald. The Washington Post tells the story about the Maximilian Emerald ring, and the lost stone.

The Maximilian Emerald is now part of the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History’s collection.
