On Sunday, a friend and I were walking up Broad Branch Road, close to the Soapstone trailhead, when we saw a large bird flying across the sky and swooping down onto a tree. My first thought? That it could be an owl, but my friend exclaimed that it was a bald eagle.
Sure enough, it was. The eagle lingered in the tree for a few minutes. Teri Huet and I attempted some photos, and she captured it on video as it flew away.
It was enthralling and also hard to believe that I was actually seeing a bald eagle. I was also frustrated that I could not zoom in for a clear shot. The eagle was too high in the tree and blended in so perfectly with the tree branches that it was hard to find with a camera lens.
Luckily, we have neighbors who are handier with a camera, and with the luck and skill to capture bald eagles in flight. Diane Krauthamer photographed this beauty on Sunday in Rock Creek Park.
