More than 100 volunteers from around the District turned out last weekend to plant more than 125 trees and 50 shrubs at the Broad Branch Stream site.

The November 5th event was coordinated by Casey Trees as part of their Community Tree Planting program, in consultation with DC’s Department of Energy and the Environment, the National Park Service, Rock Creek Conservancy and others who have been working to beautify this site following the 2014-2015 stream restoration project. Washington Fine Properties and Red Fox Cafe sponsored breakfast and lunch for the volunteers and staff.

The trees were planted according to a comprehensive planting plan developed by landscape designer Darlene Robbins, and included more than 30 native tree and shrub species that are typically found in this type of ecosystem.

Deer protection was installed. Watering and maintenance will be provided this summer through an ANC 3F grant. A second wave of planting, focusing on additional shrubs, perennials and grasses, will take place in Spring 2017.
