Here are a few places to hear some grooves, or if you’re musically inclined, to lay down some licks:
Live music is often on tap at Jake’s American Grille. Upcoming performers include Nate Ihara (8 p.m. 5/12), Tim Metz (5/19 & 6/16, see video below), and Matt Waller (5/26 & 6/9). Fancy yourself a singer? Jake’s Boiler Room hosts karaoke night starting at 8 p.m. Wednesdays. (5018 Connecticut Ave.)
Soak up some indie cool or just show your teenage kids that you still know how to rock at Comet Ping Pong‘s all-ages shows. Upcoming artists include Iranian post-punk group The Yellow Dogs w/Washerwoman (10 p.m. 5/18) and the Ketamines w/Teen Liver and The Doozies (5/24). ($10, 5037 Connecticut Ave.)
You’ve been brushing up on blues guitar at the Levine School (you know who you are) and you’re ready to show off your skills. Head over to Open Mic Night every Friday at the Modern Times Coffeehouse at Politics & Prose. (5015 Connecticut Ave.)
