Neighbors Recommend: Why icy sidewalks don’t stop me from walking

by Marlene Berlin

Icy walkways greeted us after last week’s snow and sleet storm. But they do not need to stop us from walking.

I found a solution a few years ago – contraptions that fit over your hiking boots or whatever you wear in the snow. They are removable and give you the traction to set out in ice and snow.

For the past few years, I’ve been using YakTrax. If you walk a lot and there are many wintry mix or melt-and-refreeze days, the YakTrax will wear out. In one year they barely made it through the season.

I am trying out Korkers this year.

These over-the-shoe cleats have been great for keeping me walking. And if you’re doing more walking around in our socially-distanced times, they may keep you active and sane in the winter months ahead.
