Well before WMATA rolled out the new Better Bus system on June 29th, we knew that the old, familiar lines like the L2 and the 30s buses would be remade and renamed. What we did not realize is that the new system would mean the end of the Van Ness Metro Kiss and Ride.
The signs marking the area behind 4340 Connecticut Avenue as a Kiss and Ride, or passenger drop-off location, have been removed. And with the exception of some spots reserved for WMATA personnel, the parking spaces are now off limits.
It seems this was done to make way for a new bus line: the D72 (map with stops).
This bus runs between the former Van Ness Kiss and Ride and Lafayette Square, via Mount Pleasant and Adams Morgan, and combines elements of the old L2 and 42 routes.
The D70 (map with stops) is a close approximation of the L1, the Connecticut Avenue route that was discontinued during the pandemic, except it ends at Farragut Square instead of continuing west to Foggy Bottom.
Miss the old bus lines? The maps still hang by the D72 bus stop, and go back some years. The L4, for example, was discontinued in 2012.
