DC Water isn’t done digging up Brandywine Street yet

DC Water began replacing Brandywine Street’s water main in May. Installation is complete. Now the DC Water project is in the second phase.

That entails running water through the new main and testing it. John Hamilton of Fort Meyer Construction, the contractor on this project, says they are awaiting the chlorinated water test results. Then they will attach the new main to the old water main.

After that, they will move onto the third phase, which is to take approximately 8 weeks. This entails:

Digging up the roadway again at each residence/apartment building and hooking them up to the new main. Residents will have 48-hour notice of water service disruption.

Replacing pipes from the water main to the property line with copper pipes.

Disconnecting the old water main.

Repaving the roadway.

 
Hamilton expects to have everything completed except the repaving by this December. They’ll return in the spring for the street reconstruction.

FYI, this work will coincide with the next phase of the Beach Drive reconstruction project, which could begin as early as September. Military Road, not Brandywine, is the designated detour, but GPS can have other ideas. Hamilton is concerned the area will see increased traffic.
