Backyard Nature: When the plants think it’s spring

The weather in November in many ways mimicked springtime temperature and rain patterns.

According to The Washington Post’s Weather Gang, the average temperature last month was 4.7 degrees higher than normal. For six days in a row, the highs topped 70 degrees, and the temperature hit 65 on ten straight days. And when it rained, it poured – just like spring. We got a total of 6.41 inches of rainfall – 2.97 inches above average.

No wonder the plants are confused. By Thanksgiving, flowers were blooming and trees were budding and flowering, just like they would in the spring. And I spotted two butterflies flitting around a grassy area in Rock Creek Park.

These flag irises are a spring bloom.
Winter Jasmine usually flowers in late February.
White Asters usually fade by late November.
