Backyard nature: Fox sightings

by Marjorie Rachlin

Two of my neighbors saw foxes on the snowy morning of Saturday, January 7th. One fox was running down 29th Street to Soapstone Valley. My neighbor across the street saw first one, then a second fox running in his yard.

This is the time our Forest Hills foxes mate. Early in January last year someone heard them in the backyard at night – alerted by an hour of caterwauling.

The kits will be born in 52 days, in a den under a log, a wall, or your garage.

These fox kits were hanging out in a neighbor’s backyard five years ago.

So keep your eyes and ears peeled. I’m sure there are more foxes in the area close to Rock Creek Park. Please send me a report at JMRach@aol.com.
