One of my favorite seasons of the year has begun: frog mating season.
I was walking the Western Ridge Trail this week when I heard it: a familiar faint hum. I knew at once it was the American toad. And as I approached level ground at creek level, I heard two toads in conversation.
April is the best time to listen to toad and frog calls, and as more join the chorus, the sound is magical. I need to get out regularly to hear it, especially in the evening.
A great place to enjoy the sounds is the daylighted Linnean and Broad Branch streams, where I recorded several of their songs in 2022.
