March in the Neighborhood: Spring dance, spring song, spring wildflower hikes, and spring cleaning

Welcome spring’s arrival with the Rock Creek Morris Women. This dance troupe, performing the traditional spring rites of England’s Morris dancers, returns to Peirce Mill at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 15th.

Hike Rock Creek Park with knowledgeable guides. National Park Service rangers are leading two- to three-mile hikes Fridays and Sundays from the Rock Creek Nature Center. The theme of the Friday afternoon hikes is the park’s spring awakening. The Sunday hikes, on March 23rd and 30th, focus on the wildflowers in bloom.

Save the date for a spring sing. The celebrated UDC Chorale holds its spring concert at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 28th. The location: the UDC Theater of the Arts.

Spring cleaning at Forest Hills Park. The Good Clean Fun Initiative, a project of Van Ness Main Street, is bringing the supplies and the coffee. They’re gathering at the park at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 8th, and will be hosting additional cleanups on May 10th, July 12th, and September 13th.

Forest Hills Connection is also a project of Van Ness Main Street.

March is orchid month at Hillwood. The flower was Marjorie Post’s favorite, as evidenced today by the greenhouse filled with the blooms. Hillwood says it has more than 2,000 orchids in its collection, comprising 1,200 species, hybrids and clones. The museum is hosting several tours and workshops this month focused on the exotic flowers.
