The daylighting of the Broad Branch stream and restoration of the Linnean stream last year were remarkable projects, and we’re not the only ones who think so.
Steve Saari, a District Department of the Environment watershed protection specialist, oversaw the Linnean and Broad Branch Stream projects. Along with Keith Underwood, the contractor on this project, Saari had let me know they were up for an award, and now it’s official.
The Chesapeake Stormwater Network has announced the first-place winners in six stormwater management categories, and the Broad Branch/Linnean project has won the stream restoration category. But that’s not all. Now, we get to vote on which first place winners will get a $5,000 prize. The link to the award winners and your chance to vote is below. And cast your votes soon! Broad Branch/Linnean Park Stream Restoration Project Wins “BUBBA” Award for Best Stream Restoration Project
The Best Urban BMP (best management practice for addressing water and storm water pollution) in the Bay Award contest (BUBBA) recognizes the best urban BMPs that have been installed in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
There are six categories of BUBBA’s – best residential BMP, best innovative BMP, best ultra-urban BMP, best combination of BMPs in a series, best habitat creation in a BMP, and best stream restoration. The BUBBA for best stream restoration project for this year was awarded to the restoration of the Linnean Park tributary and daylighting and restoration of Broad Branch in Northwest Washington DC.
The goal of this effort was to restore in-stream habitat and improve the urban hydrology of these two tributaries that flow to Rock Creek through a combination of bioretention, regenerative stream channel (RSC) design, and stream daylighting.
